A Celebration of Ritual Craft in a Modern World

I started Odisha Illuminated as a way to explore and share a deep personal connection I feel to the traditional arts of Odisha.

I’m not a professional curator or art historian (at least not yet!). I’m someone who’s learning by doing, collecting, listening, and spending time with artists whose work has shaped this region’s visual culture for generations. This collection is the beginning of what I hope will become a lifelong relationship with the arts - not just as a viewer or admirer, but as a participant in preserving and amplifying these forms.

Many of the works featured here are part of my own growing collection. I feel lucky that so much of this art is still accessible. Not just physically, but financially for a younger collector like me. These are pieces I’ve found in markets, workshops, and artist homes, chosen not because they’re rare or expensive, but because they spoke to something I value: a sense of place, symbolism, and story. Alongside the pieces I’ve acquired, I’ve included others I’ve come across and found moving - objects I feel deserve to be seen, even if I don’t own them.

As I’ve built this collection, I’ve also been building my understanding: learning about techniques, materials, regional variations, and the layered meanings embedded in each motif. I spend as much time as I can listening to artists talk about their process, their influences, and the traditions they carry forward. That shared dialogue has been just as valuable to me as the objects themselves.

Odisha Illuminated is both a celebration and a learning journey. It’s a tribute to a region whose artistic language feels both deeply rooted and incredibly alive. I’m honored to share it with you.
